and

'be used to' + 'noun'



 Read the sentences below: (ఈ వాక్యాలు చదవండి)

  • Ø I used to drive on the left.
  • Ø I am used to driving on the left.
  • Ø I am used to animals.
  • Ø I used to smoke.

 

Grammar explanation

‘Used to + infinitive’ and ‘be used to + noun’ look similar but they have very different meanings and uses.

(‘Used to + infinitive’ and ‘be used to + noun’ చూడటానికి ఒకేలా అనిపించినా అవి వేరు వేరు అర్థాలు మరియు ఉపయోగాలు కల్గి ఉన్నాయి.)

used to

We use “used to + infinitive” to talk about a past situation that is no longer true. It tells us that there was a repeated action or state in the past which has now changed.

used” is the verb – and it is in the past. But there is no present form! We use it when we want to talk about something we did in the past that we don't do now.

(“used to + infinitive” ని ఒక past situation ఇకపై కానిది లేదా గతంలోని repeated action or state కానీ ప్రస్తుతం కానిది తెలుపడానికి ఉపయోగిస్తాము.)

  • Ø I used to have long hair. (but now I have short hair)
  • Ø నాకు long hair ఉండేది. (కానీ ప్రస్తుతం short hair ఉంది.)
  • Ø He used to smoke. (but now he doesn't smoke)
  • Ø అతను పొగత్రాగేవాడు. (కానీ ప్రస్తుతం త్రాగడం లేదు.)
  • Ø They used to live in India. (but now they live in somewhere else)

  • Ø She used to be a runner when she was younger.

  • Ø I didn't use to sleep very well, but then I started doing yoga and it really helps.
  • Ø నేను మంచి నిద్రపోయేవాడిని కాదు. కానీ యోగా చాలా సహకరించింది.
  • ØFather was used to carrying luggage anyway. (The Journey - 10th class English) (ఎలాగూ Father కు luggage  మోయడం అలవాటే.)

Be used to means 'be familiar with' or 'be accustomed to' or ‘normal for us’.

Be used to అంటే తెలిసియుండుట, అలవాటై ఉండుట, సాధారణమైనదై ఉండుట.

Ø I am used to getting up early.

Ø నేను ఉదయాన్నే లేవడం అలవాటై ఉంది.

Ø She is used to the city now and doesn't get lost any more.

Ø ఆమె city కి అలవాటుపడింది. ఇక మీదట దారితప్పదు.

Ø He wasn't used to walking so much and his legs hurt after the climb.

Ø అతనికి నడక బాగా అలవాటులేదు అందుకే పైకి నడవడం వల్ల గాయపడ్డాడు.

Ø I'm a teacher so I'm used to speaking in public.

Ø నేను ఒక teacher కావున speaking in public నాకు సాధానణమైనదే.

 

Note: “Be used to” is followed by a noun, pronoun or the -ing form of a verb, and can be used about the past, present or future.

TOO ... TO

6th class నుండి మొదలుకుని10th class, Intermediate and Degree వరకు అలాగే Competitive Exams లో చాలా సంద్భాలలో ప్రశ్నలు ఈ క్రింది విధంగా వస్తుంటాయి. వీటిని Write as directed లో భాగంగా ఇస్తారు.

 

  1. రెండు sentences ఇచ్చి “too…to” తో రాయమంటారు.


ఇక్కడ దాని గురించి క్షుణ్ణంగా పరిశీలిద్దాం.


The words “too…to” have a negative meaning. It means ‘more than is necessary or desirable’. We don't need to use any negative words in this sentence. But the structure itself reflects negative meanings.


 “too…to” అనేది negative meaning కలిగి ఉంటుంది.  “too…to” ని ఒక sentence లో ఉపయోగించడం వలన ‘ఆశించిన లేదా ఉండాల్సిన దానికంటే ఏక్కువగా‘ అనే అర్థం వస్తుంది.


Let’s understand with an example:


  • The box was too heavy to lift it. 

(ఆ box చాలా బరువుగా ఉంది. దానిని ఎత్తలేము. అనగా ఎత్తగల్గిన దాని కంటే కూడా ఎక్కువ బరువుగా ఉంది అని అర్థం. లేదా ఆ box ఎత్తలేనంత బరువుగా ఉంది.)


How to combine two sentences into one using 'too … to'?


  • Replace ‘very’ with ‘too’ and remove the end mark (full stop)

  • Remove and replace ‘subject and negative word’ with ‘to’

  • Combine two sentences into one using punctuation..

For instance:

  • I was very busy. I couldn’t talk to her. (Combine them into one using ‘too … to’)

  • Replace ‘very’ with ‘too’ and remove the end mark: I was too busy

  • Remove and replace ‘subject and negative world’ with ‘to’: to talk to her

  • Combine two sentences into one using punctuation: I was too busy to talk to her.


I was very busy. I couldn’t talk to her.


I was too busy to talk to her.
