English Textbook చివరలో ఇచ్చే List of Words ఏమిటి? ఎందుకు?

        ప్రాథమిక స్థాయి నుండి ఎలిమెంటరీ స్థాయి వరకు గల English Textbook చివరలో ఒక List of Words ఉంటుంది. అది ఏమిటి? ఎందుకు? అని ఎప్పుడైనా ఆలోచించారా?

        ఆ List of Words ని General Service List of words (GSL) అని పిలుస్తారు. ఇక story లోకి వెళితే .... ఎప్పుడైతే ఇంగ్లీషు వారు ఇతర దేశాలలో colonies ఏర్పాటు చేసుకోవడం, వ్యాపారం చేయడం, రాజ్యాధికారాన్ని సంపాదించడం జరిగిందో అప్పుడే English ను అక్కడి ప్రజలకు నేర్పడం ప్రారంభించారు. అది వారి అవసరమా లేదా మన అవసరమా అనే విషయాన్ని పక్కన పెడితే ఇప్పుడు మాత్రం అందరి అవసరంగా మారిపోయింది.

        అదే క్రమంలో చాలామంది Educationalists చాలా కాలం projects, experiments, researches నిర్వహించి చాలా రకాల Methods of Teaching English as Second Language (ESL) మరియు Techniques of Teaching English ప్రవేశపెట్టడం జరిగింది. ఇలా జరిగిన పరిశోధనల్లోంచి పుట్టిందే General Service List of words.

            ఇలాంటి General Service List of words (GSL) లు కొద్ది మంది ప్రచురించారు. అందరి ఉద్ధేశ్యం ఒకటే అయినప్పటికీ కొద్దిపాటి వ్యత్యాసం ఉంటుంది. లేదా words ఇచ్చే క్రమంలో తేడా ఉంటుంది. కొందరు 1000, 1500, 2000 లేదా ఆపైన గల words తొో కూడా List రూపొందించారు.

                సుమారుగా 2000 words తొో కూడిన General Service List of words (GSL) ను 1953లో Michael West publish చేశారు. ఇలాంటి listsలో words అన్నీ కూడా words యొక్క frequency of usage పై ఆధారపడి తయారు చేసినవే.

             ఇలాంటి General Service List of words (GSL) తయారు చేయడానికి ESL students and teachers ప్రేరణగా నిలిచారు. ఇలాంటి Lists కూడా ముఖ్యమైనవే. ఎందుకనగా Spoken English లో 80-85% of common written text మరియు 90-95% of colloquial speech లో ఇవే words ఉపయోగంలో ఉంటాయి.

            ఈ General Service List of words (GSL) మాత్రమే English Language నేర్చుకోవడానికి లేదా మాట్లాడడానికి సరిపోతాయా అంటే కాదనాల్సిందే. ఎందుకంటే  ఇందులో ఉండే List of words కేవలం keywords/headwords మాత్రమే. అంటే ఒక word నేర్చుకోవడం అంటే దానికి సంబంధించిన దాని other forms and derivations కూడా నేర్వాలన్నమాట. ఉదాహరణకి 'be' ఉందంటే దానర్థం be forms అన్నీకూడా. అంటే am, is are, was, were, being and been.

            మరైతే కాలంతో పాటుగా భాష వినియోగంలో కూడా మార్పులు వస్తాయి కదా. అలాంటప్పుడు 1953 General Service List of words (GSL) ఇప్పటికీ ఉపయోగమా? అంటే Researches తేల్చింది ఏమనగా మొదటి 1000 words ఇప్పటికీ frequency of usage ఎక్కువగానే ఉందని. మరి మిగతావి? ప్రస్తుత పరిస్థతుకు అనుగుణంగా మార్చాలనే ప్రయత్నాలు చాలానే జరుగుతున్నాయి. వాటిని New General Service List (NGSL) అంటారు. ఇలాంటి Lists 2013 ఆ తరువాత Brezina, Gablasava, Browne, Culligan, Philips లాంటా వారు ప్రచురిస్తూనే ఉన్నారు.

             So, ఇప్పుడు General Service List of words (GSL) యొక్క importance అర్థమైఉంటుది కదా. అయితే General Service List of words (GSL)ని నేర్పడానికి Activities prepare చేయడం మంచిదేగా....
